The sun was setting when Tickham arrived back at the Hôtel Paris. She approached along the main road to the front of the building. The last little way, she had not bothered to watch out for green uniforms. Her legs cramped and her vision flickered grey. Lack of fluid, loss of salts – that would soon pass, once she had water and food. She kept her eyes half closed against the low sun and let herself stagger up and down kerbs. She bounced off other pedestrians and stepped out in front of rickshaws sleepily confident that they would stop for her. St Christopher stayed by her side.

Outside the front gate was parked a jeep. Its driver was half asleep, and started theatrically when Tickham climbed into the back seat. He shouted for his comrades and fumbled for his gun as they came running from their post under her balcony.

“Water,” Tickham whispered, waving aside the shaking muzzle of the pistol. The word came back to her: “Minum. Air.” Drink. Water.
